From that to this.
It is about 9 months since the news: Two years ago I slept with someone. It was [insert name of best friend]. And, [name of best friends two year old daughter] is my child. We did a DNA test.
Yep. That was my thoughts too - WTAF. Complete Jerry Springer moment in my life. One of those life events that will ‘never happen to me’. It happened. And, it became my story for months. The guy at the car dealership asked me why I am buying a new car, I mean other than my clear crisis purchasing - ‘my husband left for me for my best friend and their baby, so I figured I didn’t need the SUV anymore’. There was usually a version of this response to lots of random strangers for months. It was like I wanted people to know why I looked blank most days why my sparkle had disappeared.
Then it came time to get on the apps. Yes, the dating apps. I had met my now ex-husband about 7 years earlier, apps weren’t really that big yet. So online dating was a whole new world. Everything from the inevitable dick pics to message from a man in what can only be described as a 60s style suit with oversized lapels and an Austin Powers chest of hair, asking me if I was interested in making sexy time. Not really. Thanks, but no thanks.
After a couple of false starts, I responded to a profile that said: apply within before I get bored. Of all the profiles on all the apps, this was probably the most honest I had seen. It could have read before I get bored / lose faith in the opposite sex / give up hope / commit to a life of being single because this is all too hard. Whichever version it was. I felt it and it literally maybe been 6 weeks since I started my first profile.
The first date was effortless. I slow cooked lamb ragu for 8 hours during the day at my house. He had just had surgery on his leg so getting out of the house was difficult. I took dinner to him. When preparing dinner to serve, we flowed through the kitchen like we had known each other for years. We shared one kiss at the end of the night. After that date I asked him to do the love language quiz to get to know him a bit deeper. I got off the apps. We got married two years later.
And, the rest they say is history.
